President's Message
Dear JASPA Colleagues,
I sincerely hope this newsletter finds you well and enjoying a vibrant fall term on your campus. Here in New England, the leaves are just beginning to change, giving us a sneak peek of the spectacular autumn colors to come. At this point in the fall semester at Holy Cross, students are well into midterms and the events calendar is full ... it's an idyllic collegiate atmosphere.
But we all know that the true value of Jesuit higher education goes well beyond the scenes of students studying and playing Frisbee on the quad. The true value is in the tradition and mission we all share. Founded on principles of seeking the greater good, helping individuals and communities flourish, and pursuing excellence, our brand of education is meant to be a source of hope for our students, our communities, and our world.
We are also a part of a larger network of Catholic colleges and universities in the country. You may have heard of the recent publication, Principles of Good Practice for Student Affairs in Catholic Higher Education. While we will continue to explore our Jesuit values, we will also use this newsletter to dive into the Principles of Good Practice -- one each month, beginning with Principle 1:
Embraces all students as valued members of an inclusive and diverse community
that embodies God’s love for all.
That honoring the dignity of all of our students and promoting an inclusive community is the first principle and demonstrates its centrality in our work. As student affairs professionals at Jesuit Catholic institutions, I have every confidence in our deep desire to live this principle daily.
That said, we are living in a time when socio-political and cultural obstacles to living this principle are popping up across the country. We must, therefore, double-down on our guiding value to engage each of our students in the dignity of their full humanity. As you consider this principle, I ask you to understand which students experience exclusion in different aspects of campus life and to reflect thoughtfully with your colleagues about ways to authentically promote a sense of belonging and communicate how valued each and every student is.
No doubt you are already doing excellent work in this area. I encourage you, then, to consider sharing your best and emerging practices in your JASPA functional area network (FAN) meetings and at our upcoming annual conference in March 2024 at Seattle University.
With great appreciation for all you do to help our Jesuit institutions live into our shared commitments,
Michele
President, JASPA
Senior Vice President for Student Development and Mission
College of the Holy Cross
